Sun Kisses Moon Hugs Review for MCCBD 2018 1

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs by Susan Schaefer Bernardo to review for this year’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day.

by Susan Bernardo

This lovely picture book explores a theme all children can relate to, that love is still present even if loved ones are far away. This is a great book to read with children who are separated from a parent or other loved one for any length of time. The carefully chosen text gives the story a loving upbeat tone.

This excerpt is one of my favorite parts of the book.

Love travels through raindrops and waters the ground,

flows into rivers and oceans all around.

When the sky clears and the sun joins the show,

our kisses, like wishes, will slide down rainbows.

The pictures are digital illustrations artfully rendered by Courtenay Fletcher.  I love how the illustrator incorporates x’s and o’s throughout the book. To me, they conjure a feeling of love flowing all around.

My five-year-old daughter and I enjoyed the x’s and o’s so much that we decided to incorporate them into a craft.  We made cards to send to loved ones decorated with x’s and o’s using the crayon resist method. For a quick tutorial click here.

The images that portray children from many different parts of the world, combined with the universal theme of the story make this a book that can be enjoyed by all. This also makes it a wonderful addition to Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2018

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2018

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

This book sounds lovely! It would be nice to always be together, but that isn’t reality. I’m glad there is a book to help children keep a loved one present even when they can’t be with them. The x’s and o’s cards are a wonderful idea. Thank you for sharing!
